FIV+ kittens

Since we have had numerous FIV+ kitties in our program, we wanted to address some common questions about FIV. There is a lot of misinformation available online about FIV+ cats, and as a result, they tend to be passed over when people are looking for a new pet.

FIV, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, is primarily spread through deep bite wounds and scratches from serious fights, not casual play among house cats. This virus is prevalent in feral cat communities where males fight for mates and territory. In a household setting, the risk of FIV transmission to other cats exists only if there is aggressive fighting. Therefore, FIV+ cats can live with non-FIV+ cats without issue.

FIV is specific to cats and cannot be transmitted to humans, dogs, or other pets. While FIV+ cats have weakened immune systems, making them more susceptible to infections, the virus does not impact their lifespan.

Is FIV connected to FeLV?

No, FIV is different from FeLV, the feline leukemia virus. Unlike FeLV, FIV CANNOT be transmitted through saliva or by sharing bowls.

Cats and kittens with FIV+ are frequently ignored, yet they can be fantastic pets.
